2006 Merlot Napa Valley

To create our classically balanced and concentrated style of Merlot, we start with fruit harvested from a vineyard in Coombsville, just south and east of our Napa winery.   Wind and fog from the San Pablo bay ensure cool evenings and mornings, which usually evolve into warm and sunny days.  Volcanic debris and remnants of lava flows are hallmarks of the soil in this area, known for its bright and intense Merlot and Cabernet fruit.

As you raise your glass, the first aromas provide an exciting glimpse of what’s to come.  You are greeted with a spicy nose, rich with black fruit character and herbal hints of rosemary and sweet tobacco.  The first sip reveals concentrated black fruit flavors of boysenberry and plum, balanced by notes of anise and lightly steeped black tea.  The finish is framed by moderate, dusty tannins with hints of tart cherries dipped in semi-sweet, dark chocolate.

The intense, dark fruit and herbal-spice attributes of this wine are enhanced with bold and flavorful dishes such as lamb shanks slowly simmered with fresh rosemary, garlic, tomatoes, and red wine. Serve with polenta, or roasted garlic mashed potatoes.  For dessert, a warm chocolate hazelnut torte with vanilla bean ice cream.
