2006 Petite Sirah, Old Vine, Lodi |
||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() For some years, the owners of Judd's Hill have been friends with the Cranston Brothers, who own and farm about 400 acres of grapes in Acampo, just north of Lodi. They grow mostly Cabernet and Zinfandel, but there is also a 45-year old block of Petite Sirah on the banks of the Mokolemne River that has always looked good to Art and Judd Finkelstein, winemaker owners of Judd's Hill. The soils are well-drained sandy loam, the yields are kept low and the fruit always comes in tasting great. The most frequent response to Judd Hill Petite Sirah is that there is an unexpected elegance. The color is an inky purple. There are enticing aromas of violet, plum and a hint of smoke. On the palate, dark, rich fruits present themselves along with hints of licorice, all wrapped up in supple tannins. At the winery, they find the Petite Sirah drinks well with game, rich stews and meats in luxurious sauces. Can Petite Sirah be sexy? We think so! |
