Every vintage of Founder’s Art begins with a tasting and assessment of each Cabernet Sauvignon barrel at Judd’s Hill. For the 2012 vintage, some of our best Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Ehrlich Vineyard in Oakville, planted in 2006 to clone 337. The vineyard has well-drained gravel soil, the result of sedimentary deposits from the Vaca Range and Mayacamas Mountains. The moderately warm temperatures, usually in the mid-90’s in summer with cool foggy mornings and evenings, set the stage for bold fruit with thick skins. The Simonds Vineyard in St. Helena is located on gravelly alluvial fan soil with excellent drainage, an essential component in high quality fruit development. The vines are less vigorous in this area of the Napa Valley, producing smaller berries and lower yields, for more concentrated, intense wines with good tannic structure. The Kairos Vineyard, adjacent to our winery, is 100% organically grown and produces intense dark rich fruit with medium tannin. The combination of superb Cabernet Sauvignon from our most favored vineyards has produced another remarkable bottling of Founder’s Art.
