Our 2013 Meritage is sourced from several vineyards within the Napa Valley AVA. The Petit Verdot and most of the Cabernet Sauvignonin the blend comes from the Oro Puro Vineyard adjacent to our winery at the southern end of the Silverado Trail. The Merlot, sourced from the Pepin Vineyard in the St. Helena AVA, produces bold complex dark fruit. The Cabernet Franc is sourced from the Cypress Vineyard in Pope Valley, high in the Vaca mountain range with a western afternoon exposure producing bright and concentrated fruit.
A seamless year of steady seasonal weather resulted in above average yields and excellent quality grapes. A warm, dry spring brought early bud break, which helped with canopy vigor and berry size and created ideal conditions for flowering and fruit set. With the exception of one heat spike in late June/early July, temperatures were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and started ripening.
All lots comprising this Meritage blend were harvested and vinified separately, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged in French oak. The composition of our Meritage blend changes, sometimes dramatically, from year to year. This year’s blend is dominated by Merlot, followed by Cabernet Franc.Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot make up equal parts of the final quarter of the blend.
This Meritage deserves a special meal, which may be pizza or Filet Mignon. Finish the pizza with a fair amount of Parmigiana, as this salt-dominant cheese will soften the tannin and bring the rich berry fruit up front on the palate. For the same result with our higher-end pairing suggestion, top the Filet Mignon with blue cheese.
